Blog 147: The Cosmic View of the Eighth Day
Genesis’ creation epic shows God as the Maker of heaven and earth by creating order through dividing and filling the spaces with life. The day and night had ruling bodies, the sun and the moon, which defined existence through sacred time. God designated humans to rule over the abundant earth and its teeming creatures, maintaining their order and function by His wisdom. God set His throne in the sacred space of a garden from which flowed His spirit of life into all the earth, ever expanding the sacred garden space through a human priest. The human’s vocation as His image was to take the knowledge of God and His wisdom of life outward, preventing non-order and non-existence by living with purpose according to His intended function. God made humans to have a relationship with their Creator in a shared sacred space and time, a place of rest that no longer needed the work of reversing tohu and bohu. That place in time is the Sabbath, which God intended to engulf the earth in sacred space forever. This Blog explores the cosmic view of the Eighth Day.
Referring to Blog 120’s chart below, the time markers for creation week on Day 1, Day 4, and Day 7 trace God’s acts of dividing and filling around the central pivot on Day 4, making Day 7 a reality. The same diagram pattern applies to the five scrolls of the Pentateuch. Genesis begins, and Exodus and Numbers depict the journey of learning to dwell with a holy YHWH, centered around Leviticus as the core scroll, with its atonements chapter 16 as the midpoint (see Blog 99). Deuteronomy ends the infographic by illustrating how to maintain a state of resting rule with YHWH in the Land. Seeing that the Mount Sinai events establish Leviticus within the dual center of Pentecost/Trumpets, the Feasts of YHWH also fill the same map. The Feasts of YHWH, starting with Passover’s redemption, follow the unleavened journey to Sinai and the journey of the tabernacle to the Land, centered around YHWH’s dwelling with Israel at Mount Sinai (Pentecost, Atonements, and Trumpets), culminating in the Eighth Day’s new beginning that we enter into through the Sabbath worship. This visual helps us think logically about how YHWH’s new creation unfolds.
Just as YHWH created the heavens and the earth with wisdom, He likewise employs wisdom in bringing about the order of the new creation, justifying it to His uprightness. To start the process, YHWH redeemed His chosen people, purchasing them through the blood of the Lamb. He led them on an unleavened journey out of bondage to His holy mountain1, as they fed on His word, learning to trust Him through suffering lack. At the mountain, Israel enjoyed an Edenic existence in His Presence, hearing the thundering voice of their YHWH trumpeting the covenant terms of their marriage vows. He came down from the mountain to dwell in the midst of Israel’s camp in the tabernacle. But due to Israel’s failures, access to His sacred space was blocked. The Leviticus key opened His holy space, providing Israel with sacred meeting times. Atonements unlocked the portal to the Number’s journey, Israel’s ordered camp led by the throne of YHWH, to the Promised Land. On the Sukkot sojourn, Israel’s rebellious generation dies, giving birth to a new generation, created as a faithful bride prepared to inherit the Holy Land where YHWH dwells. The conquest and possession of the Land restores YHWH’s order and function to Israel’s existence, their wise reign in rest that would flow out to all the nations, filling the earth with the knowledge of YHWH. However, Israel turned to idolatry and Sabbath breaking and was removed from the Land.
Yet, YHWH remains forever faithful to His covenant, and through the Anointed One, the new adam High Priest, the Lamb of God’s blood was shed, redeeming His people and initiating a new spirit-led unleavened exodus out of slavery to sin to His holy mountain. Believers become new temples in Him, a new creation taught by His Spirit, which will ultimately bring Yeshua followers to the threshold of entering into His Sabbath reign. By keeping the Feast of Tabernacles with Him on the Numbers road, God’s people are those who have put off the flesh, died with Him in baptism, and raised to new life in Him –a bride prepared for life in the sacred space of His throne, awaiting the last trumpet to enter into the Sabbath of resting upon His throne with Him, liberating creation from bondage to chaos, and spreading the knowledge and worship of God throughout all the earth. The Sabbath without end flows into the Eighth Day as YHWH’s wisdom and order fill all creation, marking a new beginning.
Takeaway:
The timeline of creation is the timeline of the new creation. Into the darkness of lifelessness trickled light in the blood of the Lamb, separating day from night. God separated the dew and rain above from the waters below through the unleavened Word of God. The dry land rose out of the seas, creating the mountain of Eden where God would meet with His images at the sacred appointed times. Through His spirit of life flowing down the mountain, He filled the skies, seas, and land with teeming creatures. By His tabernacling Presence, lifelessness and its contamination were no more, and ordered abundant life functioned in wisdom through His Image’s Sabbath reign, echoing resounding praise to His majestic name. In this rest, there is perpetual light and peace of the new beginning, the Eighth Day.
